On July 3, 1914 the Ural College of Mines of the emperor Nicholas II (nowadays the Ural State Mountain University) was founded as the first institute of higher education in the city. The first university appeared in Ekaterinburg after decree of Council of People's Commissars, signed by Vladimir Lenin on October 19, 1920 (nowadays the Ural Federal University).

Skill levels of graduating students of Ekaterinburg institutes of higher education is one of the highest in Russia, particularly by quantity of graduates representing present administrative elite of Russia. Now there are 20 state institutes of higher education available where there are more than 140 thousand students: skill level qualification of graduating students is one of the highest in Russia, particularly by the quantity of graduates representing present administrative elite of Russia, the Ekaterinburg institutes of higher education concede only to institutes of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Besides, there are 14 private institutes of higher education in the city, including one municipal authority - the Ekaterinburg Academy of Modern Arts and one church authority - the Ekaterinburg theological seminary. The oldest and perhaps most known private institute of Ekaterinburg was opened on December 27, 1990. It is a Humanitarian university - unique in Ural-Siberian region private institute having status of university. In Ekaterinburg there is a unique military institute, one of 7 military institutes of the country - the Ekaterinburg artillery institute (EKAI). The military institutes of higher education have got under reduction within the limits of military reform of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Anatoly Serdyukov.

There are over 49 educational institutions of the higher vocational education in Ekaterinburg. 16 of them are branches and representations of foreign institutes of higher education. System of education in Ekaterinburg includes several hundred kindergartens, 168 state schools, 11 private schools, 38 state colleges, 2 private colleges, 15 state universities, institutes and academies and 13 private institutes.

Ekaterinburg is one of the prominent scientific centers. 140 research institutes and developers make scientific researchers here. 70,000 people are involved into research effort.

The Ural State University named after Alexey Gorky (now is a part of the Ural Federal University) was founded in 1920. It presented a number of different institutional branches: engineering, economy, social science and natural history. This University made the basis for higher professional education in Middle Ural. Later on, many independent institutes of higher education appeared in Ural. The UrSU is the leading Russian institute of higher education. Its graduates are highly skilled professionals in science, education, economy and culture. Scientific researches in natural History and Sociology were led here. It marked the beginning of well-known schools of thoughts. Now these schools contribute to high quality education and successful scientific work.

The Ural State Polytechnic University (now is a part of the Ural Federal University) is another famous university in Ekaterinburg. It was founded as a branch of UrSU in 1920, according to the decree of People's Commissar Council. In 1925, the Ural State Polytechnic University became an independent educational institution. In 1992, the Ural State Polytechnic University was renamed into the Ural State Technical University, according to the decree of Russian Federation Government. Later it was renamed again into Ural State Technical University - UPI (USTU-UPI). 30 graduates from this University became Heroes of Socialist Labor, 200 graduates got Lenin's Prize or State's Prize, some of them became ministers, company executives, heads of universities and statesmen.

The first president of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin also graduated from this university. Leading position belongs to the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (UB RAS) and numerous scientific research institutes and establishments were situated in Ekaterinburg. The Number of students is approximately 200,000. With its 16 state-owned universities and educational academies, as well as a number of private higher education institutions (as of 2005).

Ekaterinburg has cultural, scientific and educational potential, due to great number of universities. That is why it is considered as the leading educational and scientific center of the Urals.
