EXPO 2020 Ekaterinburg

Ekaterinburg has lodged its official bid to host the World Expo 2020. The other official candidates are Izmir (Turkey), Ayutthaya (Thailand), Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Dubai (the United Arab Emirates).

The official theme of Expo 2020 in Ekaterinburg is "Global Mind: Uniting All Humanity in a Single Conversation."

The Ekaterinburg Expo would be the culmination of the long-term international outreach and friendship building campaign Russia developed through the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup. All these events create a sequence of global events across a six-year period that would give Ekaterinburg 2020 unprecedented visibility in the years leading up to its celebration.

Ekaterinburg Expo 2020 will be the capstone of a grand effort to reconnect Russia to the world and a touchstone for the relationship of Russia with the community of nations heading into the future.

That is precisely why Russian leaders Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin have chosen Ekaterinburg as the candidate city for this important international event. As Russia's fourth largest city and the largest Russian city in Asia, Ekaterinburg is an established capital of economics, industry, commerce, culture, education, exhibitions and sport in one of the most powerful emerging regions of the nation. Located on the border of Europe and Asia, Ekaterinburg is a cosmopolitan metropolis that serves as a microcosm of both Russia and our world.

The city is investing billions in urban infrastructure, including modern transport systems, techno parks and attractions and one of the world's largest housing projects. There is a smart, long-term development and growth strategy already in place and being implemented successfully.

Ekaterinburg is a world-class center for science, learning and new ideas. There are 45 higher education institutions and 20 academic research institutes in Ekaterinburg. It is Russia's most important technological and scientific center. This wealth of scientific and technological knowledge and human capital is today providing for the modernization of this region and the ability to contribute in solving global problems.

Ekaterinburg is an international city. More than 20 foreign consulates and diplomatic missions are located in Ekaterinburg. It enjoys twin-city partnerships with 12 foreign cities. There are more than 300 multilateral companies with offices and operations, with more arriving here every month to seize the opportunities that the city and region can suggest.

Ekaterinburg also offers a vibrant cultural experience for residents and visitors with more than 30 museums and a variety of cultural institutions.

Ekaterinburg enjoys a diverse economy characterized by manufacturing, services, financial services, commerce and knowledge-based industries such as education, research and technology.

Ekaterinburg has experience in hosting high-profile events such as international summits and business meetings - the Annual Innoprom International Exhibition, the SCO and BRIC summits in 2009, Dmitry Medvedev-Angela Merkel meeting in 2010. The city hosts more than 100 business missions annually. It will be one of the venues for the 2018 World Cup.

Russia is expanding its engagement with the world community and political leadership through its chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in 2012 and G20 in 2013. The world is experiencing a revitalized and outward-looking Russia, with a young, creative and innovative-thinking population.

There is a strong support across Russia and in Ekaterinburg to host Expo 2020. The country is united behind this project, and the Russian government at all levels is committed to providing financial and diplomatic support. Public opinion polls demonstrate strong Russian enthusiasm for this initiative.

World Expo 2020 in Ekaterinburg will give the world an opportunity to experience first hand the historic transformation of New Russia. It will also give Russia an opportunity to engage in a shared dialogue with experts and citizens from around the world and contribute to solve global problems. And certainly with Expo 2020 Ekaterinburg will continue modernizing and developing the city.
